Research activity of National Agricultural University of Ukraine has been developing at all stages of its history. The world famous scientific schools have been emerging under the leadership of prominent scientists. Among them were Academician M.F. Kashchenko, an outstanding biologist, an acclimatizator and a vegetables, fruit and decorative plants selection breeder, founder and director of acclimatization garden of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and Pomological Museum; Academician E.P. Votchal, a famous plant physiologist, an innovator of such a field of science as crops physiology and founder of the Ukrainian school of plant physiologists, Professor O. G. Lebedev, a geneticist and plant breeder, Professor P.R. Dushechkin and his followers academicians P.A. Vlasyuk; S.I. Lebedev, Professor I.L. Kolosha (physiological and agrochemical bases of plant nutrition), and others.
Scientific achievements of the schools of Professor P.D. Pshenichnyi (development of principles and how-to recommendations on farm animals feeding), K.B. Svechin (individual development of animals), I.V. Smirnov (cryopreservation of mammals sperm), M.A. Kravchenko (cattle and horses breeding), I.O. Povarzhenko (problems of veterinary surgery), G.O. Gimmelreikh (animal morphology), V.V. Nickolskyi (veterinary virology), M.T. Scorodumova (veterinary therapy), O.K. Shcherbina (veterinary epizootology), S.Yu. Jaroslav (animal physiology), S.V. Bazhenov (veterinary pharmacology), M.P. Dyadechko (biological protection of plants) and others have contributed to the storehouse of knowledge of Ukraine.
Contemporary achievements of the researchers of the leading agricultural educational institution are acknowledged by the state.
Outstanding scientist, Rector of the University, Head of the Department of Biological Chemistry and Biotechnology, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor D. O. Melnychuk; famous scientist Doctor of Biological Sciences O. O. Sozinov are elected the academicians of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; Professor P. I. Gvozdyak — its associated member.
Among the state line academies the Ukrainian Academy of Agricultural Sciences carries considerable authority. The following NAUU faculty members were elected its academicians: O.Yu. Barabash, G.O. Ryzhenko, P.P. Rousnak, D.M. Sigaryova, A.G. Serdyuk, A.A. Strochynskiy, S.P. Tanchyk, A.V. Tsvilikhovskiy, A.V. Tsylyuryk, V.A. Yablonskiy are corresponding members of the Academy.
There are 21 honorary workers of science and technology, 23 honorary workers of education and higher school of Ukraine, 3 distinguished inventors of Ukraine, 7 honorary workers of agriculture of Ukraine, 1 honorary economist of Ukraine, 1 honorary veterinary surgeon of Ukraine, 4 honorary workers of culture of Ukraine, 1 honorary master of popular art of Ukraine, 17 laureates of the state prizes of Ukraine, 8 classmen of education of Ukraine among NAUU faculty body. Research, pedagogical and public activities of the university’s scientists are acknowledged both in Ukraine and abroad.
Academician Dmytro O. Melnychuk was awarded with the title of Honorary Professor of Tokyo Agricultural University for his great personal impact into the development of collaboration between National Agricultural University and Tokyo Agricultural University and for assisting the international activity in the sphere of agricultural education.
The Ministry of Agricultural Policy of Ukraine granted Academician Dmytro O. Melnychuk, Prof. V.I. Sheremeta, Prof. M.K. Shykula and Director of Nemishaevo Agricultural College N.V. Kostenko with the order «Znak poshany» for their long-term and fruitful work, high professional abilities and great impact into the development of agrarian science and education.
According to the President of Ukraine order the two-year state scholarships were granted to Professors for their great impact into the development of science and education: S.P. Azizov, L.U. Berenshtein, G.O. Bogdanov, V.P. Gudz, M.O. Demydok, I.I. Martynenko, V.D. Moiseyenko, V.K. Myakushko, V.V. Naumenko, O.O. Salgansky, M.O. Sudakov, O.A. Strelcov, V.Y. Chumachenko, M.K. Shykula, O.V. Shkilyov.
During the recent decade above mentioned scientific schools have been functioning actively in the NAUU. A lot of new schools are being formed: the school of academician the NAS of Ukraine and the UAAS D.O. Melnychuk (biochemistry), the school of academicians of the UAAS O.Y. Barabash (vegetable-growing), M.M. Gorodniy (agrochemistry), M.I. Gudkov (radiobiology), M.M. Kyryk (phitopathology), B.K. Tereshchenko (entrepreneurship), G.O. Chmelnitskyi (veterinary tocsicology); schools of the associated member’s of the UAAS: V.M. Bulgakov (mechanics of agricultural machines), D.G. Voitjuk (agricultural machines), V.P. Galushko (international management in agro-industrial complex), I. I. Ibatullin (animals feeding and forage technology), A.I. Mazurkevich (pathophysiology), A.A. Strochinskyi (forest taxation), the schools of professors: B.Kh. Draganov (energy saving in agriculture, heat phisics of agricultural buildings), V.I. Mishin (electrical machines and their use in agriculture), S.K. Rudyk (anatomy of mammal digestion), I.A. Tsurpal (nonclassical problems of mechanics) etc.
At the present stage an academic activity of NAUU faculty is aimed at fundamental research, exploratory and development in farming, plant growing, vegetables growing and horticulture, animal science, veterinary medicine, mechanical and electrical engineering for agriculture, forestry, agricultural economics.
The main directions in scientific activity are:

Animals’ health, quality, biosafety, international certification and standardization of production technologies of agricultural and food products.

Economy, marketing, administration and quality management in the field of AIC and nature protection.

Mechanization, electrification and automation of agricultural, forest and water complexes and processing fields of AIC, biotechniques, alternative sources of energy, computer management technologies in AIC.

Rationalization of social development of rural area, legal securing of population of rural area.

Mastering of new systems of information-consulting provision for specialists in AIC and nature protective field.
Research activity at NAUU is co-ordinated and directed by Scientific and Research Department.
NAUU researchers closely co-operate with research institutions of Ukrainian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, educational institutions, research stations, scientific centres, research and production units, plants and other production institutions.
In the scientific and research activities such resources are being used: material and technical bases of educational and research, scientific and research institutes, of problem scientific and research branch labs of quality and safety of agro-industrial complex production certificated by the State Consumer Standard of Ukraine, of training and research stations — Agronomy and Boyarka Forest Stations, educational and research enterprises — «Vorzel», «Velykosnitynske» named after O.V. Muzychenko, enterprises of regional educational institutions of the University — Berezhany and Nizhyn Agrotechnical Institutes, Irpin Economical and Nemishaevo State Agricultural Colleges, Boyarka College of Ecology and Natural Resources and Zalischyky State Agricultural College named after E. Khraplyvy, Southern Branch «Crimean Agricultural and Technilogical University» of NAUU, Education and Research Bird Breeding Plant named after Frunze.

They are: «Herbology», «Selection of fruit and berry crops and technologies of their raising», «Fertilizers», «Optimization of nutrition and bio-conversion in agroecosystems management», «Mycology and phytopathology», «Phyto virology and biotechnology», «Feed additives», «Genetics of animal productiveness», «Biochemistry of animal dormancy», «Non-contagious internal animal diseases», «Animal physiology and experimental pathology», «Veterinary microbiology, virology and immune biotechnology», «Animal’s mycotoxicosis», «Heat-engines and alternative fuels», «Precise farming systems», «Problems of increasing of agricultural electrical appliances safety and efficiency», «Complex accounting of forest materials and forestry usage», «Labour motivation in agriculture», «Computer technologies in studying process», «Soil protection and rational use», «Comparative and functional morphology of spine animals», «Biological plant protection». Highly qualified scientific potential and modern equipment are concentrated in these labs.
Since 2003 the decision about creation the Ukrainian Laboratory of Quality and Safety of Agro-industrial Complex Production at the basis of NAUU was made by the government. This is the single native independent laboratory that has an international certificate for making the unique researches. It gives characteristics to the state of quality and safety of agricultural production and its adaptation to the world standards and certificates. All this will assist the process of entering Ukraine at the international agricultural markets.
