Rapid integration of NAUU into the international education and scientific community has preconditioned the creation of Information and Computer Communications Office . Later, it became a high-capacity information center (today, Education and Information Center of Computer Technologies ). Its initial objective was to provide the University with computer communication means (e-mail and Internet).
Prior to the establishment of the Center its future staff members passed long-term training in Pennsylvania State University (USA). The Rector of NAUU Acad. Dmytro O. Melnychuk agreed with its authorities on purchasing first computer hardware for NAUU.
A number of sponsors contributed to provide the Center with needed facilities. Among them there are Louisiana State University (USA) in the person of Dr. Rouse Caffey, and Pennsylvania State University (USA), with the assistance and financial support of Voskobiynyks’ family. Considerable funding for purchasing equipment for the Center was provided by Dwojak’s family, U.S. businessmen. Along with foreign sponsors financial support was given by local company «Ukragrotech» (headed by V.I. Stepakhno). Certainly the University, itself, and charitable foundation «Prospects of NAUU» have also made considerable allocation to it.
With the development of computer technologies the functions of the center became broader than just support for e-mail communication. Today, the Center provides technical coordination and consultation in the following areas:
- wide implementation of Internet- Intranet-technologies;
- computer hardware service and maintenance;
- administration and maintenance of telecommunication center;
- computerization of education process and teaching modern information technologies;
- domain e-mail accounts’ users service;
- creation of internal e-mail service network for documents circulation;
- dial-up access in the Center’s office;
- development and support of local network.
Due to joint efforts of administration and technical specialists of NAUU and Iowa State University (USA) a separate department — Media-Center — was created. The areas of its activity are:
- design, support and regular update of NAUU web-site (www.nauu.kiev.ua) in Ukrainian and English languages;
- design and hosting of web-sites;
- digital video- and photo shooting, cutting videos, and image digitizing;
- media-production (presentations, videos and audio recording);
- computer design of graphic objects (logos, labels, posters, booklets, multidimensional objects).
Creation of Media-Center allowed us to create multimedia materials for teaching process as well as for seminar, conference, and workshop data ware.
The Center provided with needed technological and human resource assistance its new-created functional divisions — Office for Electronic Teaching Resources, Telecommunication Office, Computing Laboratory. Today, they are assuring respective areas of the University’s activity independently.
As a leader in application of computer technologies in the University Information Center together with other University’s offices continues to work on the development of information system that consists of departments of education and research institutes, research centers, library, administration offices and services. Together with technological support, the Center is responsible for introduction of automated library system and centralized databases management system.
Specialists of Education and Information Center of Computer Technologies of NAUU have strong command of modern technologies in corporate information system management. They collaborate with leading higher education institutions, international organizations, state and commercial bodies, ministries and public administration agencies.
Due to the efforts of the Center’s staff National Agricultural University maintain the largest computer infrastructure among all agricultural higher educational institutions in Ukraine.
